Lansu Yuan Garden 蘭蘇園,Portland, Oregon March 26 & 27, 2022
”Step in to Spring 踏春“ was celebrated at the Lansu Garden in the spring of 2022. We were invited to hold a workshop utilizing camellias from the garden. Sixteen participants attended and they all brought beautiful arrangements home.
Lansu Garden was opened in September 2000 and Portland was a sister city of Suzhou, China. The name of the garden represents the relationship of sounds from both Portland and Suzhou combined to form Lan Su. “Lan” (蘭)is also Chinese for “Orchid” and “Su”(蘇)is the word for “Arise” or “Awaken,” so the garden’s name can also be interpreted poetically as “Garden of Awakening Orchids.” (蘭蘇園)

Petals, scents & colors; flowers have appeared in art for thousands of years. Traditional Chinese flower arranging began in the fifth century during the Six Dynasties period around the same time when Buddhist floral offering was created. The Traditional Chinese Floral Arts embraces this art form in all its glory by weaving together different methods, ideas, and visions in order to bring formality, symbolism, and aesthetics to life. On display were photographic images and a re-imaged scholar studio along with scents of tea, incense, and flowers.
